Current trend in developing roads network is to make 4 or 6 or even 8 lanes roads involving huge investments and occupying large land; in particular farm land thereby available land for farming keeps getting reduced.
Of course, transportation gets faster and more efficient consuming lesser fuels (like petrol, diesel, CNG) per Km of distance travelled.
As a result,
Population of private cars keeps increasing rapidly due to comforts and pleasure of driving on 4 or 6 or 8 lanes roads; thereby total consumption of fuels (petrol, diesel, CNG) is increasing at much faster rate than ever before.
However, public transport is not a preferred mode because it largely remained inefficient and/or inadequate to cater travel needs of people.
Younger farmers leave farming in favour of working in cities.
Govt. may better focus to the following in making New India:
Improve public transport and increase its frequency so that people will find it most convenient.
People should be encouraged to use bicycles for their day-to day needs at home and at offices.
People should be discouraged to own private vehicles.
Roads should have only 2 lanes for heavy vehicles with separate sideline track for bicycles and for safe walking.
Huge investments on making roads of more than of 2 lanes should be diverted to other developmental needs including for education, health and farming.
Above steps have many benefits; a few are listed below:
Will save petrol and diesel consumed in private vehicles that not only pollute air but also cause traffic congestion, be it e-vehicles.
Will save environment since emissions and exhaust from the vehicles are responsible for Global Warming and damage to the environment most.
Use of bicycles will create more jobs in "Repairs & Services" down to the smallest and remote villages. This will effectively help in reversing Rural Migration; thereby as sideline farming is also revived and becomes first choice amongst the youngsters in a family of farmers from the comforts of own homes in villages.
This also help to build "New India" of our dreams at the earliest and at the least cost.
